about

I am a freelance editor, author and artist who has written several books about drawing, including Sketch Your World and Pen and Ink. I recently completed a master's in library science at City, University of London, where for my dissertation I researched the collection and accessibility of sketchbooks in the UK. I also have a degree in fine art from Winchester School of Art. I currently work at the UCL Institute of Education Library in London, and have volunteered at the Stuart Hall Library, Iniva, Shoreditch. I formerly freelanced as a subeditor at the Guardian and the Art Newspaper, among other places.

I'm on the advisory board of Urban Sketchers, and part of its editorial team. I was a founder member of the London Urban Sketchers group. I also blog regularly on the Urban Sketchers international blog.

I live in Stoke Newington, London, with my wife and two daughters.

I appeared briefly on NBC Nightly News on 20 January 2018 in a report about the rise of the Urban Sketchers movement: this is a link to it.

There's an interview with me on the Jackson's blog, here, which says a bit about the way I work. If you're doing a school project, get in touch if you want to. That's fine with me.
